July 15, 2021 Newsletter

Another new member! On July 12, Travis inducted Chris Atchison, who transferred to our club from a Rotary Club in Iowa City. See Barry's Message below for more information.

President Barry's Message
Each One Bring One
During our Monday meeting on July 12, we passed out a Rotary coin that lists the values that all Rotarians live by and is a perfect conversation piece and something we can give to a potential member. The idea is to give it to a guest we invite to our meeting and ask them to show it to us when they arrive. With one of the areas of focus being membership, we can do our part to help grow the 1.2 million Rotarians to 1.3 M.
With our day-to-day routines returning to normal, we are now meeting friends and family more often as we enjoy the summer weather.  The conversations often are to share what we did during the pandemic. This presents an opportunity for us to invite our friends, family, and co-workers to either an online or in person meeting at our club.
Please Welcome Chris Atchison
Chris Atchison (image on left) has transferred his Rotary membership from the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club to the Rotary Club of Springfield. At our July 12 club meeting, Membership Chair Travis Magoulias inducted Chris into our Club (lead image), and I presented him with his red membership badge. Chris recently moved back to Springfield. He previously lived in Springfield from 1973 to 1991 and is married to Mary Jo Atchison. He is a semi-retired public health consultant. Chris has already been active in the club as he has participated with the flag pick up. We look forward to working many more service projects with Chris going forward
Mini Libraries Update
We are very close to installing three out of the four mini libraries that we built with funds from a District Literacy Grant (image on right). They will go to Ridgley School, Enos School, and St. Johns Breadline. We are selecting a 4th location soon. Two of our newest members Nicole and Garrett Kinkelaar have volunteered to coordinate the mini libraries and the 60 cases of books. These libraries  will give a child the opportunity to have a book or two to read and share, keep, or trade for another.  Nicole and Garrett, thanks for volunteering and we know you will do a great job.
Chamber Golf Outing
Again this year, we will sponsor a hole at the Springfield Chamber Golf Outing.  We are still needing volunteers to help at the event. This is a great opportunity to meet many new people and to invite them to a meeting. The event is July 22 and 23, and it is a lot of fun and a chance to hang out with fellow Rotarians and potential new members. Please let Vicki Megginson know if you can work the afternoon on either day while you have fun and meet new people.

July 19, 2021 Meal Reservation
Now that we are back to full capacity, we will no longer announce the menu for dining at Maldaners Upstairs or for curbside pickup. The meal will be Chef's Choice as it was prior to the pandemic.
Please continue to make reservations for in-person meals so we can estimate our seating needs and for curbside meals so Maldaners knows you are coming. The deadline for reserving dinner for the July 19 meeting is Saturday, July 18 at 5:00 p.m. Meals are $15 each. Please use the following link to make your reservations for the meal for indoor dining or curbside pickup by clicking:
For curbside users, please place your meal tickets or cash in an envelope with your name and “for Sheila Mack” on the outside of the envelope and give it to the Maldaners staff member that gives you your food. They will get the envelopes to Sheila Mack. Curbside pickup is between 4:45 and 5:15 p.m. To pick up food, turn into the alley behind the building and pick up the food at the back door. It's easy to pick up your food an the food is delicious!

Donations for Ridgely School Supplies Needed
School is starting next month, and this brings the return of our support to Ridgely School with school supplies. We have gathered and donated supplies based on the Back to School lists on the school website for many years, but last year with COVID sequestering, Tim Granzeau suggested we take an additional approach. Many members donated cash to the Springfield Rotary Foundation, then supplies were donated based on requests from teachers. For example, children were told to have separate writing utensils at school and at home to reduce the spread of COVID transmission, so this doubled the need for pens, pencils, and markers. We were able to fill all the requests the teachers gave!

You may also procure items for students based on the Ridgely School 2021-2022 Supplies list, which you can download from our website home page by clicking on the highlighted link in this sentence. Please bring your donated items to our club meetings over the next few weeks. Please also consider making a cash donation to the Springfield Rotary Foundation for the supplies identified by teachers. Checks should be made out the Springfield Rotary Foundation with Ridgely School Supplies written in the comment line. You may bring your check to our meeting or mail it to Springfield Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 615, Springfield, IL 62705.
