Club Honors Bob Lynn
On August 24, it was our club’s honor to present Bob Lynn with another Paul Harris Pin, reflecting his continuous generosity to The Rotary Foundation, and to recognize him as an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Springfield. The image of Bob and Naomi Lynn to the left was taken at one of our recent holiday parties. Bob and Naomi participated in the August 24 meeting online.
Dr. Robert Lynn, a veteran of the Korean War, first joined Rotary in 1969 while residing in Manhattan, Kansas where he served as dean of the College of Business at Kansas State University. Masterfully juggling his time between home with four lively daughters, university, academic research and authoring a 5-edition textbook that became a national standard for teaching basic economic principles for years, Bob also found time to embrace Rotary. After retiring from KU to support Naomi, as her career in higher education advanced, the couple moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he was asked to step in as Interim dean of Clark Atlanta University- he did so well that his interim position lasted for four years!
My Book Review for August
Book Review:
The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline, 2020
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely. Great men are always bad men....
-Lord John Dahlberg-Acton (1834 – 1869)
A novel whose genesis for the author was a Fellowship in Australia provided by a Virginia Rotary Club when she was a graduate student.  It follows the lives of three women convicts who are transported to Australia and an eight-year-old aboriginal girl who is taken from her tribe by a haughty English Lady.
Evangeline is a vicar’s daughter whom he has educated.  When he dies, she becomes a governess in an upper-class family.  Wooed and seduced by the oldest son, she becomes pregnant.  When she tells him, he gives her a ruby ring that belonged to his grandmother.  He the goes on a trip to Venice.  While he’s gone, his mother discovers the ring and notifies the police of the “theft.”  Evangeline is sentenced to 14 years in prison.  After eight months in prison, she’s shipped as a convict to Australia.  On the way, she gives birth to a daughter.
