September 2, 2021 Newsletter

Just a friendly reminder that we will not be holding our club meeting on September 6 because of the holidays. Help us spread the word about our first 5K event! See stories below.

President Barry's Message
Special Thanks to Rotarian Katherine Vandiest
We thank Katherine Vandiest of the Rotary Club of Clarksburg, California for her inspirational presentation on the work of  the Baja Bridges Network at our August 30 meeting. It was wonderful to learn about their outstanding efforts to provide fire-fighting equipment and supplies, as well as Emergency Management Training and educational supplies to the Baja region of Mexico and their assistance with the ongoing fires in California. We were pleased to meet her daughter and son-in-law, who joined her for dinner at our meeting (image to right). We also thank Katherine for her volunteer efforts with our Flag Service Project. Because she will be living part-time in Springfield, we hope that she will make regular visits to our club.

Celebration of Life for Mike Plog
The celebration of life Mike Plog will be held on September 4, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Church, 745 Woodside Road in Springfield. Mike was a past president and long-time member of our club and was known for his kindness and fine sense of humor. He passed away on September 9, 2020, but the gathering was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Everyone over the age of two will be required to wear a mask at the event. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Participants are asked to bring folding chairs if they wish to eat outside. Please join us and his family to help celebrate the life of this wonderful man. Mike sent us the image below to accompany a book review he did for a previous issue of our Newsletter.

Chicken Dinner Fundraiser is September 18 and 19!
Please buy and sell tickets for chicken dinners for our Springfield Rotary Clubs fundraiser in partnership with the Knights of Columbus. Tickets are $12 per dinner. You can purchase tickets for carry out dinners that will be picked up at Casey's Pub, 2200 S. Meadowbrook Road, Springfield on Saturday, September 18 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. or Sunday, September 19 from noon to 3:00 p.m. Our club had a total of 300 tickets to sell, and we still have 67 left for Saturday and 40 for Sunday. Please help us sell these tickets. Carry-out chicken dinners are easy to sell and make great gifts for family, friends, neighbors, etc. Our proceeds will benefit our communities and humanitarian projects around the world through our foundation and Rotary International. Contact Barry Tobias if you would like to purchase tickets or volunteer for the events. We still need a few volunteers for Saturday.

Helped Needed for Rotary Youth Exchange
The Central States Rotary Youth Exchange (CSRYE) has announced it will be accepting applications for students interested in going to school in a foreign country during School Year 2022-2023. Applications from interested students must be submitted no later than November 1, 2021. The Board of Directors for our Club has voted to sponsor both an Outbound and Inbound student for the school year. Sponsoring and hosting an exchange student is a rewarding experience. The image to the left shows the delightful Sabrina Paez, the last Inbound Exchange student that our club co-sponsored. As the Youth Exchange Officer for our club, I need the membership’s assistance for 2022-2023 Exchange Students.

First, we need a minimum of two families willing to host a foreign student, and both families must live within the same school district, and in Springfield, within the boundaries for the same school. We will not be considered for an Inbound Student until we have the first host family recruited. If you know of any family that would be interested in hosting a foreign exchange student, please let me know their contact information or have them contact me (bkemp1100@hotmail.com).

Second, if you know of any high school student, preferably a sophomore this coming school year, that you think would be interested in becoming an Outbound Student, also please let me know or have the family contact me at my email address so I can meet with the entire family to cover the requirements with them. Applicants can be between the ages of 15 and 18.5 years old, but must complete the program by the time they reach 18.5 years old.

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide in this effort.  Additional information for a prospective student/family can be found at the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange website, www.csrye.org.  Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Ridgely School Supplies
Great news! District 186 has partnered with generous donors to be able to supply the following items for each K-5 student in the district. Click on this link for what has now been provided for students. But it is not all the students need. Please compare this list to the original supply list for any grade level specific items that will still need to be purchased. This link  will show you the full list.

You can bring supplies to our meeting.

No time to shop, don’t worry, you can give a gift to our Springfield Rotary Foundation and designate it to Ridgely School Supplies. Make your check out to the Springfield Rotary Foundation and bring it to the meeting or mail it to Springfield Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 615, Springfield, IL 62705.

Ridgely School Food Pantry - Use is rising fast!
Shelves are being emptied out faster than usual.  Please sign up to monitor this pantry. You can choose the first or second half of month. You will need to check the pantry each week and help round out the supply with dry and canned goods. Hygiene and cleaning products are needed too. A few treats for children are also appreciated.

Volunteers are needed for: November 1-15 and November 16-31. Once those shifts are filled we post the schedule for December.

Flag Service
Special thanks to all of the Rotarians and Volunteers who are helping place flags in lawns before Labor Day (September 6) and will pick them up following Patriots Day (Sept. 11). This is our last installation and pick up for this year!

Do you know or are you someone who has a passion to give back to your community? The Rotarians in this image are helping pack essential items for the Illinois Police Department to give to homeless individuals in our community. As a Rotarian, you adhere to the principles of the 4-way Test., which are:
  • Is it the Truth?
  • Is it Fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships?
  • Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
If you find value in these ideals and want to be part of a great organization, right click on the attached link to open our Membership Application in a new window. You can also download a copy of the Membership Application from our Club's website Home Page (www.spirotary.org) in the Download Files section. Please email images of service activities to Bonnie Styles at bonstyles@yahoo.com. It's easy to take pictures if you have a smartphone, but even an old style camera works just fine. Send me an email (bonstyles@yahoo.com) to let me know when you will be volunteering for a service project, and I will come out and take some images. The image on the right shows Rotarians assisting with street clean up in Downtown Springfield on August 21 in preparation for the Downtown Open Streets Day.
