A new Rotary Year with new jokes: Join us for some tasteful jokes from our new President, Barry Tobias, and a fine Maldaner's dinner too. Pun intended! Rotary is fun!

President Barry's Message
Getting to Know Megan Norman
As the Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator for Familia Dental, Megan (image on left) spoke to us about how Familia gives back to the community.  They provide dental services supporting low income, and in some cases individuals, who cannot afford dental care. As a new Rotarian Megan Norman’s passion to give back to our community is very contagious. She is actively involved in our local community giving back and volunteering daily. Megan is a role model for how Rotarians Serve to Change Lives, and we look forward to working with her.

Rotary International Foundation
Bob Stuart spoke to us about the Nepal project and the need for help in providing the necessities like drinking water. This is a great opportunity for our new members to work side by side with Bob and others at the international level, and we encourage you to get with Bob to learn more. If you have a passion for working with others abroad and you have ideas or suggestions of other ways Rotary can give back, then this project is a great opportunity for you to be involved.

Cards and Cubs Game October 3
Everyone loves the rivalry between the Cardinals and the Cubs, and the game on October 3 could be one of the games that determines a spot in post season. This is also our opportunity as Rotarians to help promote the game and to help raise thousands of dollars. The form for ordering tickets for yourself, family, friends, co-workers and others is available on our Rotary website (www.spirotary.org) in the Download Files section. For more information, check out the article by Rod below. Let’s really reach out as we have in the past and be the club who promotes and sells the most tickets. Go Cards!!!

Thank You 5K
Dave Kromphardt spoke to us about the Thank You 5k event our club is putting on for our local heroes and first responders. The event will be held at Southwind Park on October 30, and we will begin promoting the event starting in August. We will need many different types of volunteers within the club with help needed before and during the event. In addition, we also have a shirt that the people entering the event will receive, which will support the Rotary Colors of Gold and Blue and a tribute to our local heroes. Please reach out to Dave to see how you can get involved in the first Thank You 5K.

Randy Erford to Serve as President Elect
I am very happy to announce that Randy Erford (image on right)  has accepted the nomination to be President Elect this year and will take over as president in 2022-2023. Randy has a vast knowledge of Rotary and has served as Sergeant of Arms in the past for our club. In addition, Randy brings a lot of passion and a great sense of humor to our organization. He will be a great asset to our club, and I look forward to working with Randy throughout the year.

Join us in person or online to learn about the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) from1st Lt Lee Davis (image to left), the Public Affairs Officer of the Springfield Composite Squadron of the CAP. He will describe what CAP does for emergency services, including the role they played during 9-11. He will also speak about their cadet programs and aerospace education.

Donations for Ridgely School Supplies Needed
School is starting next month, and this brings the return of our support to Ridgely School with school supplies. We have gathered and donated supplies based on the Back to School lists on the school website for many years, but last year with COVID sequestering, Tim Granzeau suggested we take an additional approach. Many members donated cash to the Springfield Rotary Foundation, then supplies were donated based on requests from teachers. For example, children were told to have separate writing utensils at school and at home to reduce the spread of COVID transmission, so this doubled the need for pens, pencils, and markers. We were able to fill all the requests the teachers gave!

You may also procure items for students based on the Ridgely School 2021-2022 Supplies list, which you can download from our website home page by clicking on the highlighted link in this sentence. Please bring your donated items to our club meetings over the next few weeks. Please also consider making a cash donation to the Springfield Rotary Foundation for the supplies identified by teachers. Checks should be made out the Springfield Rotary Foundation with Ridgely School Supplies written in the comment line. You may bring your check to our meeting or mail it to Springfield Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 615, Springfield, IL 62705.
