President Barry's Message

October 18 Rotary Meeting at the African American Museum
On Monday October 18 our downtown club will visit and meet at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American Museum (1440 Monument Avenue, Springfield). Parking is available at the Museum. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with things starting at 6:00 p.m. You will need to eat prior to the event since no food or beverages are allowed. One of the exhibitions (image to left), on loan from the Negro League Baseball Museum, honors and explores the connections of African American Baseball history to Hispanic cultures, communities, and countries. This will be an evening to remember so please bring along a family member or friend.

Great Start for Citrus Sales
At last Monday’s meeting Bill Smith shared that after only 1 week our sales are already over $2000. This is a great start to the citrus sales for the holidays and I encourage everyone to talk to your friends and family who love oranges and grapefruits from the Indian River area.

Thank You 5k on October 30
With October almost half gone we are getting close to the Thank You 5k on October 30 in honor of our local first responders. If you get a chance, please pass the information on to your friends, family, and co-workers. Everyone knows someone who is a first responder or who has gone the extra mile during the pandemic. So whether you walk or run please register for the event and we are still looking for volunteers to assist during the event.

Registration is Open for Our 5K Event
Our club's "Go the Extra Mile 5K" will premiere at Southwind Park, 4965 S. 2nd St in Springfield, IL on Saturday, October 30. This family-friendly event honors frontline workers. Online pre-registration is required. To register, click on this link:

The registration link is also provided on our Facebook page as an event and a post. Please share the Facebook Event with your walking and running friends! Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome to pre-register and will receive a free t-shirt if they register before October 10. Registered participants may pick up their packets at Hope Pavilion near the Rotary Sunflower Sundial in Southwind Park on Friday, October 29 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. or at check-in on race day. All runners and walkers will check in at 7:30 a.m. at Hope Pavilion on October 30. The 5K will start at 9:00 a.m., and a separate race for children 10 and under will also be held. The top 3 finishers for each age class in the 5K will receive medals. All participants in the Children's Race will receive medals.

Planning for this event, was supported through a Rotary District 6460 Club Grant. Please join us for this event and help us honor our frontline workers. Runners and walkers will be asked to identify a frontline worker that they will run/walk for, and we will take their picture with that person's name. We will create a collage with all the images to celebrate the event and the workers.
Help us Spread the Word and Volunteer for our 5K
You can help us by sharing this newsletter or our Facebook Event post. You can also direct people to the lead story on our website homepage (www.spirotary.org). Travis Magoulias made a poster/flyer using the base image to the left, and he and Jasmine Gibson are distributing the flyers to hospitals, clinics, fire departments, police stations, and other venues that employ frontline workers. If you would like some flyers to distribute to friends, colleagues, and other venues, you can download the flyer by clicking on this link or from the download section of the web site home page.

Please join one of the committees that we have established. Those who are already serving on or want to volunteer for a committee are invited to join us at an upcoming committee meeting. The seven planning committees are: Registration, Publicity, Sponsors, Race Technology, Honors Collage, Shirts,  Awards, and Race Day. We need a volunteer to take pictures of runners holding the signs with the name of the individuals they are honoring for the collage. Images taken with a cell phone would be fine for this purpose.

Please let me know if you want to be a part of the planning group - dkromphardt@yahoo.com or 815-488-2787.

Pints for Polio Event on October 23

We received an invitation from Brian Barstead of the Springfield Sunrise Rotary Club to participate in a social event for World Polio Day.

He invites us to have a cold one and celebrate the women and men from Rotary who have worked together for decades to nearly eradicate the Polio Virus from the face of the planet.

Springfield’s version of Pints for Polio will be at Motorhead’s (Toronto Rd and I 55, just south of Springfield) on Saturday, October 23 at 4:00 p.m.  It’s well ventilated and a fun place to meet. Come out and have some fellowship. There will be 50:50 raffle and a few door prizes.

Record Your Service Hours and Contributions
Please remember to report your service hours and related contributions. Just follow this link:

Please email images of service activities to Bonnie Styles at bonstyles@yahoo.com. It's easy to take pictures if you have a smartphone, but even an old style camera works just fine. Send me an email (bonstyles@yahoo.com) to let me know when you will be volunteering for a service project, and I will come out and take some images. The image on the right shows Rotarians helping make mixed boxes of oranges and grapefruits for a previous citrus drive.
